What is the best way to learn a foreign language?

Ideally, one can spend an extended period of time living in a country where that language is spoken natively by most people. Unfortunately, most people will not have that kind of opportunity. I read that the best alternative is to start with your listening skill first. Just take in a lot and a lot of input. And gradually, you will be able to understand the language. Very much like how a baby learns. But it seems that in school, we spend a lot of time learning how to read and write, memorizing vocabularies and grammar rules. Only to find out, after years of hard learning, that you cannot even handle simple day-to-day conversation and watch a movie without looking at the subtitle :P Any thoughts? |
